Magirus GmbH has responded to recent reports of fire incidents involving older fire engines in Germany and has launched a comprehensive examination. To this end, the company has contacted the Institute for Loss Prevention and Loss Research (IFS) in Kiel, Germany, and is supporting the analysis and transparent assessment of the matter. The first joint examinations between the IFS and Magirus took place this week at the company’s Donautal facility in Ulm at the invitation of Magirus.
Background to the incidents
Various media outlets and online forums, referring to a press release issued by the IFS, have reported an increased number of fire incidents involving fire appliances built on chassis from a particular manufacturer produced between 1995 and 1999. Among other things, a potential link was mentioned between Iveco Eurocargo chassis and EuroFire-series fire engines built on this chassis type.
As a bodybuilder, Magirus takes these indications extremely seriously. Although no evidence has so far suggested a systematic technical defect or an increased fire risk associated with the superstructure, the company has proactively initiated several measures. These include establishing contact with the IFS and conducting a comprehensive analysis of all available information. In addition, the open exchange of technical data involving independent experts, as well as communication with the chassis manufacturer, are being prioritised.
Magirus supports call for transparency and cooperation
The Ulm-based company welcomes the IFS’s appeal to fire brigades to report any potential ignition events or near-fire incidents involving vehicles. Every additional piece of information helps to build a complete picture and to rule out potential risks. “The safety of firefighters and the public is our highest priority. We follow up on all indications with great care, assess them based on facts and communicate transparently,” says Fatmir Veselaj, CEO of Magirus.
According to the current state of knowledge, the reported incidents relate exclusively to chassis from specific production years. Bodywork built on these chassis types from other production periods shows no comparable irregularities.
Magirus will continue to keep the public and fire brigades informed about any new developments.
