A revolution: Magirus turntable ladders

Over 140 years ago, as our founder Conrad Dietrich Magirus invented the first free-standing, mobile turntable ladder, it was a revolution, on which still drives our company's development to this very day. This revolution has become a story of evolution to write each day. Today most fire-fighters and disaster responders still rely on Magirus turntable ladders. Perhaps because we constantly continue to develop them with new ideas, make major and minor changes, and equip them with the most innovative technologies available.

The unique design of Magirus turntable ladders.

Thousands of Magirus turntable ladders are being successfully used throughout the world. This success is guaranteed by their mature and technically unsurpassed construction combined with exceptionally intelligent and reliable technology. More

Magirus articulated arm technology.

Those who only look straight ahead rarely see a revolutionary innovation. No one knows that better than our turntable ladder developers. Consistently thinking outside the box led them to a brilliant new solution in the early 1990s: MAGIRUS articulated arm technology. More

Rescue work, especially in the case of obese people, often presents nearly insoluble tasks. The Magirus Rescue Loader replaces improvisation with structured, trained usage procedures – a clear plus for rescuers and those they assist.  More

Intelligence can be highly pragmatic.

Magirus is a high-tech company. Nevertheless, when it comes to turntable ladder production, we remain essentially a manufactory. High-tech and outstanding craftsmanship: We combine the two to deliver the quality that our customers have come to expect.

The fact that Magirus turntable ladders are widely considered to be the best in the world can be explained by the large number of intelligent, practical and detailed solutions they contain.

  • Control & computer technology

    Control & computer technology

Two series – always Magirus quality

    • Semi-automatic turntable ladders with sequential movements according to EN 14044
This technology enables various hydraulic movements in succession only; not simultaneously. It satisfies customer requirements in several specific markets and is available with a working height of 27 or 32 m.
    • Fully automatic turntable ladders with combined movements according to EN 14043
Equipped with modern load-sensing hydraulic equipment as well as intelligent control and monitoring technology, this technology enables the simultaneous execution of various hydraulic movements. Magirus fully automatic turntable ladders meet the most demanding customer requirements in the world. They are available with working heights from 27 to 60 m as well as with articulated arm technology.

Magirus computer technology – at the very highest level

    • Increase of active and passive safety due to mature computer technology. For nearly 30 years, thousands of Magirus computer-controlled turntable ladders have been successfully and reliably in service
    • Enhanced motion comfort and shorter set-up times with the load-sensing hydraulic system
    • Highest reliability and lowest follow-up costs due to interference-free digital signal processing
    • Electronic monitoring system (CAN bus) with retrievable menu programs for special customer requirements as well as remote diagnostics and service information. GPS and SMS optional
  • Magirus VARIO jacking system

    Magirus VARIO jacking system

The unique VARIO system ensures ladder support at any width or variable from 2,400 to 5,200 mm. The infinitely variable outreach control enables automatic switching to the largest possible outreach value needed for various support widths. Because the four stabilisers can be variably controlled, the support base can be optimally adapted to the available space. Level differences of up to 700 mm can be compensated.

    Magirus ladder sets

As the world's leading manufacturer, Magirus produces turntable ladders with working heights from 27 m to over 60 m. The ladder sets used for these are robust yet extremely light. They have the following advantages:

    Ladder set

    • Laser-welded rail profile made of high-strength fine-grain steels
    • Primed using a cataphoretic immersion bath
    • Continuous, extremely high handrails and no installations for unproblematic climbing

    Winch for extension and retraction

    • Easy, sensitive and more cost-effective to maintain than a hydraulic cylinder

    Stainless steel profile

Corrosion-free ladder guides due to stainless steel profiles for ladder extension systems Wear takes place on wear-sliders intended for this purpose, not on the ladder set profile

  • Fall protection in the ladder set

Fall protection in the ladder set

Magirus fall protection in the ladder set secures persons from falling while in as well as falling out of the ladder set when climbing. Non-articulated and articulated ladders use different functional systems for fall protection. The system can be used with or without the attached rescue cage. Both versions are compulsorily combined with a safety/signalling unit, a so-called status light. The turntable ladder is placed in the desired position without further preparation. By pressing a button on the ladder set (top or bottom), the operator triggers the "climb ladder" function. This disables ladder operation to allow one or two users to use the ladder to climb down from the cage or climb up to the top of the ladder.

  • Main control stand

    Main control stand

    Main control stand

The ladder is controlled from the main control stand, which is integrated on the turning drive. Ergonomic use and clear organisation are key in the design of the control stand. The ergonomically shaped operator's control stand is very wide and provides comfortable seating for fire-fighting teams in full gear. Elements such as joysticks, swivelling displays, deadman's controls, emergency winding installations and intercoms are arranged in the GRP body so that easy access to the seat is always guaranteed. The seat heating facilitates longer missions and is highly resistant to dust and water. The built-in seat speakers and swivelling microphone assure communication with the cage. A canopy is optionally available.

  • Magirus oscillation damping system CS (Computer Stabilised)

Magirus oscillation damping system CS (Computer Stabilised)

Magirus oscillation damping system CS (Computer Stabilised)

The computer recognizes any oscillation in the turntable ladder the instant it starts. Within a split second, it actively damps the oscillation through hydraulic countermeasures. This applies to wind gusts just as much as mission-related oscillation – such as when a person jumps into the cage.

User benefit: More safety. More performance. More convenience. A longer service life. Lower cost of ownership.

  • Cage operating stand

    Cage operating stand

Microprocessors installed in the cage operating stand register all ladder movements and factor them in when regulating the cage level. Here, too – analogous to the main control stand – the operator uses two joysticks to steer the ladder. All functions available at the main control stand are also accounted for in the cage control stand. Access to the cage control stand is also possible in the transport position. The information shown on the display is easy to see and informs the operator about all important processes.

  • Magirus rescue cages

    Magirus rescue cages

    Magirus rescue cages

The rescue cage can be manned rapidly via the quick entrance behind the driver's cab. The access ladders facilitate getting in the cage from the ladder set.

Both three- as well as four-person cages have two separate cage entrances with fold-away doors on the sides. The protection bars enable unimpeded access – important for PA supports.

  • RC300 rescue cage

A standard feature of this four-person cage is the water monitor piping integrated into the cage floor. The water monitor can either be attached to one of the two multifunctional columns in the classical manner or – optionally – be permanently installed in the front of the cage. Its maximal output is 2,500 l/min. Water outlets and shut-off valves are conveniently located in the front area. The most important data are:

    • Payload 400 kg
    • Two multifunctional columns positioned at the sides
    • Control stand in the cage centre
    • Four sockets (1 x 400 V, 3 x 230 V)
    • Fold-away doors on the sides and protection bars enable unhindered access – important for those wearing breathing masks

    Variant 1

Two LED floodlights integrated in the cage front. Plug-in water monitor. The water piping is outside of the cage on the side.

The water monitors permanently installed at the front of the cage substantially reduce set-up time. The extremely space-saving installation eliminates space restrictions in the cage.

  • Magirus Safety Peak

    Magirus Safety Peak

Because in an emergency, every detail counts.

The top ladder section and turret of all Magirus turntable ladders are serially equipped with anchor points for rope rescue and fall protection. The Magirus Safety Peak, an optional cage-mounted protection bar, allows convenient and even safer work in the cage. This kind of detail makes your life easier in an emergency.

    Example: Fall protection

The Magirus Safety Peak can provide optimal fall protection from the cage, e.g. when working on a roof. The belay device is attached to the Magirus Safety Peak and can easily be operated from the rescue cage. The turntable ladder can be precisely controlled from the rescue cage.

    Example: Rope rescue

Likewise, the Magirus Safety Peak is perfectly suited for rescue operations with basket stretchers, e.g. from the depths of a construction site. The basket stretcher can be easily attached to the MAGIRUS Safety Peak from the rescue cage using the optional connector. The length of the connector for stretcher rescue is variable.

  • Stretcher swivel support (KTL)

    Stretcher swivel support (KTL)

    Stretcher swivel support (KTL)

After intensive analysis and cooperation with customers, Magirus has developed a swivelling stretcher support device that can handle loads of up to 270 kg. This development includes all known features of previous Magirus swivelling devices, such as:

    • 360° swivelling
    • Option of attachment on both cage sides
    • Numerous locking options
    • Mounting options for the widest variety of stretcher and rescue basket makes, both standardised and non-standardised

Thus, fire brigades that use our new RC 400 cage do not have to do without any previous features and advantages. And what's more, it has a special characteristic: The 270° kg carrying capacity enables the same easy handling during the rescue of obese people. This solution shows how Magirus responds to market demands and facilitates the daily work of many fire brigades. Under certain circumstances, it eliminates the enormous amount of time and effort required in crane rescues. For patients themselves, such rescues are connected with much less stress because the rescue is much faster and the patient is always accompanied in the cage. The financial expense is minimised as well.

  • Monitor & Positive pressure ventilator

    Monitor & Positive pressure ventilator

The two multi-function columns on the cage can be used to mount either the stretcher support or the monitor and a positive pressure ventilator simultaneously.
