Working for more traffic safety

Fire department: Volunteer Fire Department Marburg-Ockershausen, Hesse (Germany)

When it comes to major road accidents, not only the generally recognised civil protection organisations help, but fire departments as well. The Fire Department Marburg-Ockershausen is therefore very concerned that all traffic participants – regardless whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, drivers or even Segway users – are sensitive to the interests of other traffic participants as well as more considerate and attentive in everyday traffic. This is why the Volunteer Fire Department Marburg-Ockershausen organised the "Traffic Campaign" day. At the same time, the organisers wanted to demonstrate the valuable work of the Volunteer Fire Department and other blue-light organisations as well as use the project for PR work and member retention.

Together with partners

The Fire Department Marburg started preparing for the "Traffic Campaign" day over six months ahead. They were rewarded by an attendance of approximately 1000 interested visitors. Together with numerous cooperating partners – without whom the project would not have been possible – a highly diverse programme for all age groups was offered on 16 July 2016 over an area of 1700 square metres. Because the average age of the population – and thus all traffic participants – is getting higher, one main priority was working with senior citizens. But there were also many offers for novice drivers and children. Last but not least, refugees from the Hessian preliminary reception centre in Marburg were issued a special invitation to prepare them for the German "traffic jungle".

Simulated accident and age-simulation suit

Together with the rescue service, the Fire Department Marburg simulated a car accident to demonstrate how a car is opened with heavy-duty tools and the injured passengers rescued as gently as possible. The BOB and MAX campaigns contributed by the police were designed especially for young and older traffic participants. Among other things, visitors could test an age-simulation suit. The Regional Council provided information on road safety and held a quiz. The DRC and Johanniter Unfallhilfe presented their work and various emergency vehicles. At the DEKRA, guests in seat belt simulators could see for themselves what even a minor accident feels like.

Alcohol levels and blind spots

The Association Against Alcohol and Drugs in Traffic had a driving simulator that demonstrated the impact of alcohol and drugs at the wheel. The DAK used an alcohol level parkour to show the impact alcohol has on perception and dexterity. The local traffic police used a truck to illustrate its blind spots and how dangerous they are, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. The Allgemeine Deutsche Fahrradclub provided information about cycling as well as the opportunity to register bicycles. The Verkehrsclub Deutschland likewise offered information about cycling. The Marburg Flitzer set up a parkour where visitors could try out Segways. The Stadtwerke Marburg had information on the public transport system.

The day was supported by additional health insurance companies, insurance companies and car dealerships, which among other things contributed the vehicles that fire departments use for training purposes. Many volunteer clubs and associations that emphasise road safety were represented and local companies were also involved. The campaign thus connected the various civil protection organisations as few other projects have done.

Repeat performance planned

The project was advertised in the local press, by official communications of the town council, on Facebook, on a dedicated website and also with print media such as posters, plus flyers that were distributed to many households. Because the cooperation worked so well and all partners were convinced by the success of the first event, "Traffic Campaign" days will be held again at regular intervals in the future.

Due to the PR work, at least the Fire Department attracted new applicants who wish to become active members. The organisers reached many people – from young to old – on the "Traffic Campaign" day and sensitised them about the dangers inherent in everyday traffic situations. "If this day only prevents one accident or causes an emergency lane to be formed faster, our efforts will have definitely paid off," said the Fire Department Marburg-Ockershausen.
