The Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award was first announced in Germany in 2012 and has been organised on an international level since 2013. The aim of the Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award is to increase public awareness of the immense and selfless dedication of the firefighters who serve the community every day.
Every year we call on our comrades everywhere in the world to compete for the Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award. This involves the most exciting missions, courage, tactics, creative strategy and dedication. We award the prize in various categories, national and international. We assess not only individual performance, but also teamwork, in particular. And we create a stage for putting the value of each individual fire brigade and fire brigade comrade in the focus of the public eye.
A jury assesses all the reports received and selects a short list of national and international competitors. Then fire brigade fans from around the world pick their favourites from the list. For the awards ceremony the highest-ranking teams come to Ulm, the location of Magirus headquarters. At the event the national and international "Firefighting Team of the Year" will be officially annouced. Both teams win an unforgettable trip to New York with a visit to the most famous fire department in the world, the FDNY – New York Fire Department.
The competition is named after an individual who was a pioneer in firefighting and who to this day remains a role model for those in the profession all over the world: Conrad Dietrich Magirus. The fireman from Ulm made it his mission to improve safety in firefighting for himself and his peers. He came up with revolutionary missions that went on to receive international attention, such as the turntable ladder, also known as the ‘Ulm ladder’. He founded Magirus 150 years ago, and the company follows the same spirit today, focusing on the work of firefighters and giving these professionals special recognition with the Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award. If you want to know more about our tradition, read here.
